Salary medians from BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives, and nurse practitioners (29-1071). Specialty premiums are estimates from professional association data and recruiter benchmarks. Board exam pass rates are recent year averages from AANPCB / ANCC / NCC; specific program and cohort outcomes vary widely. Verify current data with your specialty board before making decisions.
How to pick
Three filters. In order:
- 1. RN experience match. Your existing background matters. Med-surg/family RN to FNP is natural. ICU RN to AGACNP or CRNA is natural. Forcing a wrong fit is hard.
- 2. Lifestyle preference. Want hospital shifts and acuity? AGACNP, ENP, CRNA. Want regular hours, outpatient? FNP, PMHNP (telehealth), AGNP-PC. Want women's health focus? WHNP or CNM.
- 3. Earning ambition. Want top of NP pay? CRNA, ENP, PMHNP, AGACNP. Want broad job market? FNP. Want to make your own schedule? PMHNP via telehealth wins.
Common mistakes
- Choosing FNP "to keep options open" when you actually want a specialty. FNP is broad; if you know you want psych, do PMHNP.
- Choosing PMHNP for the salary alone. The work is challenging. Make sure you actually want to do mental health care.
- Choosing CRNA without ICU experience. Programs require it; underprepared applicants get rejected or struggle once enrolled.
- Choosing the cheapest program over the right specialty. A $30K savings on tuition that locks you into a specialty you don't want is the worst possible outcome.
